What is Your Why?
As a recent graduate of Project Zygote, and the founder of Spry, I wanted to share my experiences and failures (many failures), with my fellow entrepreneurs and health professionals in the hope that we can work together to create a better healthcare system.
My blogging will be erratic and may look to be all over the place, but I feel as though this is an accurate depiction of what it is like to start a company.
Starting a company is difficult. Starting a digital health company is very difficult. Starting a digital health company in the US - extremely difficult. Why is it difficult? Well, there are so many rules and regulations that are barriers to entry, and for the aspiring entrepreneur, this can be very daunting to start.
For this reason, I believe that in order for an entrepreneur to be truly successful, they need to think larger than themselves. This means that they need to want to help other people and have a ‘why’ (check out Simon Sinek’s TED talk). This is important for two reasons:
You’re going to have setbacks. Many, many setbacks. You’re going to feel like giving up, however if you have a drive to help people and improve their lives, then you won’t give up because you have others relying on you. This has been a really important driver and understanding my 'why' has been key to why I’ve made it this far.
People will believe in you and support you. If you don’t truly believe in what it is that you’re doing, people will see straight through that. I’ve been super lucky to have had so many amazing mentors, supporters that have helped me so far. For all the doctors and dietitians who have taken my call, thank you so much - I know how busy you all are so I really appreciate it.
So what is your why? Write it down and put it somewhere you’ll see it every day. You can ask questions on Twitter @D_Mack7
